Share of voice calculator

Enter how many mentions your brand and up to five competitors received over the same period. You get each brand's share of voice and, if you add positive and negative counts, positive share of voice and net sentiment. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Use the same sources and the same period for every brand.

Enter mentions for your brand and at least one competitor to see the result.

Commently counts these from the same sources for your brand and up to five competitors, checks that each mention is really about the brand, and scores sentiment for the brand.

How it is calculated

Three numbers, one fair comparison.

Share of voice divides a brand's mentions by all mentions in the set. Positive share of voice does the same with positive mentions only, so a rival's crisis does not count as a win for them. Net sentiment subtracts negative from positive mentions and divides by the brand's own total.

  • Share of voice = brand mentions ÷ all mentions in the set × 100
  • Positive share of voice = brand positive ÷ all positive in the set × 100
  • Net sentiment = (positive − negative) ÷ brand mentions × 100

Questions
How do you calculate share of voice?
Divide your brand's mentions by the total mentions of your brand and the competitors you track, over the same period and sources, and multiply by 100.
Why add positive and negative mentions?
Volume alone rewards a crisis: a rival's bad week raises its share of voice. Positive share of voice and net sentiment show who is talked about well, not just who is talked about most.
Is my data stored?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing to Commently or anyone else.
